Chapter Twenty-Two

Rosalina mixed mashed pumpkin into the flour with her hands, working the mixture into a smooth dough. Once it was ready, she slapped it onto a floured surface and divided it into even sections. One by one, she rolled each portion with her hands until they were a suitable thickness for gnocchi.

Opposite her, Ginger was making a mess of the dough she was pushing through the pasta machine. And Nonna was once again trying to teach her how to use it. After seeing this scenario several times, Rosalina was pretty certain Ginger may have been messing it up on purpose just to get Nonna’s attention.

Helen sat at the end of the kitchen table. In front of her was a mound of herbs, onion and chorizo. Nonna had her on sauce duty—a spicy chorizo ragu that was already filling the kitchen with delicious aromas.

Rosalina’s phone rang, and she gasped. Archer! After dashing to the sink, she quickly washed her hands. Hang on, Archer.

Not recognizing the number on the screen, she huffed in frustration and jabbed the green button. “Ciao.”

“Hey, Rosa. How are you, babe?”

“Archer!” Taking the stairs from the kitchen, she headed to her bedroom. “Where have you been? I’ve been so worried.”

“I know, I’m sorry. I have so much to tell you. I’ve just landed in Rome.”

“Rome already!” She squealed, and relief bounded through her like a litter of playful puppies. “Oh, thank God. Did everything go well with the American Navy?”

He paused, and she could practically hear his mind churning.

“What? What happened?”

“A lot happened, but it’s all okay now.”

She stomped her foot. “You tell me right now, Archer Mahoney.”

“Babe, please. I don’t have time. I just want to hire a car and get to you, okay?”

“Is it Jimmy? Is he okay?”

“Yes, he’s fine.”

Something about his tone had her believing he absolutely was not fine. “He’s not with you, is he?”

He huffed. “No, but he’s okay. He had to stay in the Caribbean to sort a few things out.”

“Is he hurt?”

“Rosa, please, babe. Listen, I’ll be there in about ninety minutes, and I’ll tell you everything. I promise.”

She groaned.

“How about you make me something delicious? I’m starving. That plane food—”

“You just get your ass here, mister.”

“I will. Love you.”

“I love you too.”

Ending the call, Rosalina’s mind twisted and bucked over what was wrong. She had a rotten feeling that their illegal dealings with the Brazilian cartel were not over. And if that was the case, she would not be happy.

Ginger giggled as Rosalina made her way downstairs. Her cheerfulness was a million miles away from the dread crawling up Rosalina’s spine. Still standing by the kitchen table, Ginger brushed hair from her cheek with a floury hand. “Are Archer and Jimmy okay?”

She nodded. “Archer’s just landed in Rome. He’s on his way here.”

Nonna clapped her hands together, casting flour into the air. “Perfecto. We shall make a feast to celebrate his return.”

Ginger held up a sheet of mangled pasta. “Not if I don’t get this right.”

Nonna playfully slapped the back of Ginger’s hand.
